Annapurna Poonhill Trek

12 days Duration
3,120m Maximum Altitude
2-8 Group Size

With seven days of good hiking, through hill villages, gorges and fertile forest, Poonhill is the ideal short trek that doesn’t compromise on the full beauty of the Himalayas.

Overview

Fly from Kathmandu to Pokhara, marveling at the mountain views from your aircraft, then trek through the stone villages and terraced farms of Majhgaon and Landruk, cross the Modi Khola to the Gurung center of Ghandruk, then traverse the forested ridgeline to Tadapani and on to the hilltop crossroads of Ghorepani (“horse water”). After enjoying the sunrise view from Poon Hill, you’ll descend the zigzag stairway of thousands of crafted stone steps for a night in the Magar village of Ulleri, before ending your trek at riverside Birethanti, and returning via Pokhara to Kathmandu.

Route

Standing on top of Poon Hill as sunrise unveils the sweeping Himalayan vista, your early morning start is richly rewarded as the glittering night sky gives way to the spectacular panorama of peaks from this famous viewpoint.

A trek well suited to first-time hikers, these fertile southern flanks of the Annapurnas are easily accessible from the adventure hub of Pokhara and home to hospitable hill folk such as the Gurungs, Magars and Tamangs. This trek doesn’t take you right in among the mountains but delivers an unrivalled range of scenery rising directly from the sub-tropical valley to the Himalayan foothills up to the ramparts of the sacred, unclimbed Fishtail.

As you find yourself quietly climbing through forests of pine, bamboo, oak and rhododendron with flashes of deep crimson in spring, look for birds, hanging moss and delicate orchids blooming in the trees. Rest on age-old platforms along the path. You are actually on the trail to Jomsom, up the Kali Gandaki river, whose Thakali village teashops have long hosted the ebb and flow of trans-Himalayan traffic. Your footsteps follow those of travellers, merchants and pilgrims who for centuries have plied this historic and well-kept trade route, accompanied by the clinking bells of decorated mule and pony caravans carrying loads to and from Tibet.

March to May offers clear weather and relative calm before Everest expedition teams descend on the region and then the days start to become rainy and overcast in May.

September and November may be the most ideal time to visit, with most of the tourists gone and the monsoon season over, making way for crisp, pre-winter days. During these four months expect comfortable temperatures and blue skies during the day and opportunities for some exceptional long exposure photography and many shooting stars at night.

May and September, expect damp and overcast weather on the trail, and with it weather-related delays for flights in and out of Kathmandu.
